‘My ark sings in the sun’ (Laugharne)
Oil on canvas

‘I envisaged ‘Prologue’ as a visual process of observations of natural history from Dylan Thomas’s studio window. I think you have to actually visit and witness this geophysical setting in order for the poem to really come to life and to gain its full understanding. It would be hard not to be swayed to write a visually rich representation of such an influential, beautiful place with its vast surroundings. So I opted for a direct interpretation of the poem by using the source itself (his studio and boat house home) and its inspiring location. In order to get the full feeling of the Taf Estuary at dusk, this painting is best viewed in subdued light.’ Simon Royer
